If the 2012 presidential election were held today with either Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich as the GOP candidate, President Obama would win among registered voters, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll. Still, voters were split on whether Obama deserves a second term.
More registered voters also believe President Obama understands their economic plight than does Romney, according to the poll. Obama would beat front-runner Romney 51 percent to 45 percent and Gingrich 54 percent to 43 percent.
When voters were asked who "better understands the economic problems people in this country are having," 52 percent of registered voters answered Obama. Romney only garnered 37 percent, with 11 percent answering both, neither or undecided.
The poll was conducted from Feb. 1 to Feb. 4, with 879 registered voters polled from a random sample of 1,000 adults. The margin of error was plus or minus four points.
