2007 Special Elections -- House Races

Special elections have been called this year in five districts: Calif.-37, Ga.-10, Ohio-05 and Va.-01, which all had seats left open by members' deaths, and Mass.-05, where a member resigned in the middle of the term.

      • Democrats: 2


Calif.-37

On April 26, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) called for a special election to fill this seat following Democrat Juanita Millender-McDonald's death on April 22. (Almanac Profile | District Map)
Filing Date: May 14
Primary: June 26
Election: Aug. 21
Challengers  
Laura Richardson (D), state assemblywoman, won the race with 67% of the vote.

John Kanaley (R), police & Army Reserve officer, received 25% of the vote.

Ga.-10

On Feb. 22, Gov. Sonny Perdue (R) called for an election to fill this seat following Republican Charlie Norwood's death on Feb. 13. (Almanac Profile | District Map)
Filing Date: April 26
Primary: June 19
Runoff: July 17
Challengers  
Paul Broun Jr. (R), a physician, won the runoff with 50.4% of the vote.

Jim Whitehead (R), a state senator, received 49.6% of the vote.

None cleared Georgia's primary system to make the July 17 runoff.

Challengers  
Robin Weirauch (D), a public administrator, received 43% of the vote.

Robert E. Latta (R), a state congressman, won the election with 57% of the vote.

Niki Tsongas (D), a community college dean, won the election with 51% of the vote.

Jim Ogonowski (R), a retired USAF officer, received 45% of the vote.
