District Profile: The 1st includes Albuquerque and some of its suburbs, and is 43% Hispanic. Yet the district has sent a Republican to Congress since 1968. Full Profile

2006 results: Heather Wilson (R) defeated Patricia Madrid (D) by 105,986 to 105,125; Wilson is running for Senate.

Darren White

White, the Bernalillo County sheriff, was nominated with 82% in a two-way primary.

Democrat

Martin Heinrich

Heinrich, an Albuquerque councilor, was nominated with 43% in a four-way primary.


NM-02 (House Race Hotline Coverage)

District Profile: Demographically and politically, the 2nd is diverse. The district was 47 percent Hispanic in 2000, the highest of any New Mexico district, and 5 percent Indian. Full Profile

2006 results: Steve Pearce (R) defeated Albert Kissling (D) by 59-40%; Pearce is running for Senate.

Republican

Ed Tinsley

Tinsley, a restaurant owner, was nominated with 32% in a five-way primary.

Democrat

Harry Teague

Teague, a former Lea County commissioner, was nominated with 52% in a two-way primary.


NM-03 (House Race Hotline Coverage)

District Profile: Although several parts of the 3rd tend to vote Republican, this is on the whole a Democratic district; both Hispanics and Indians are very Democratic, and in Santa Fe and Taos, the affluent and hippie migrants have produced a strong leftist tilt. Full Profile
