For Every Action, A Reaction

We all know the pros/cons of Obama's top short-listers on the Dem ticket. But what about the repercussions beyond WH'08? Here's a quick look at what could happen back home if one of these Dems ultimately serves as VP:

-- Kaine would be replaced by LG Bolling (R), which could derail any potential for a "Kaine legacy" and give GOPers a good shot at taking back the gov mansion in '09. But do GOPers want to be the incumbent party in '09 when 1) the economy's in the tank; and 2) the legislature remains deadlocked over traffic?

-- Then there's Bayh. If his successor is chosen by a GOP gov, it would most certainly drive a stake through any chance at Dems hitting 60 seats. Polls show Daniels w/a big lead over Dem Thompson (thanks to his heavy ad presence). But Dems think the state's weak economy could drag Daniels down.

-- Biden, a la Lieberman '00, can run for re-election and VP simultaneously. And given that DE GOPers had to coax their likely nominee from retirement to run, there's little chance Dems will lose their hold of the governship this year.

Quote of the Day

"It sure is nice having a little more time on my hands, and I'd love to spend some of it with you. Would you like to join me for dinner?"

— Hillary Clinton, in a fundraising letter, release, 7/29.

Buck Up, McCain-iacs

Pollster.com's Lombardo notes the trend from '88-'04 shows that GOP WH candidate tends to under-poll in the summer (with the exception of ''00). Every other year, the GOPer polled significantly behind the Dem at this point in the race. Each of those times, however, the GOPer improved his position, gaining an average of 15 pts relative to the Dem.
