Keystone — XL or Light?

The pipeline and the beer compete for brand-name attention.

Keystone Light: Not Keystone XL.

When political junkies hear the word Keystone, the controversial oil pipeline that President Obama rejected this week probably comes to mind. When beer drinkers hear Keystone, their thoughts turn to a moderately priced beer produced by the Coors Brewing Company in Colorado.

Is Coors worried its Keystone beer is tainted because of the pipeline of the same name?

“They share the same name, but that’s where the connection ends,” Coors spokesman Colin Wheeler said in an e-mail to National Journal. “As for potential impact on the brand, it’s highly unlikely.”

TransCanada, the Canadian company seeking to build the pipeline from Canada's tar sands to Gulf Coast refineries, said there is no special story behind the project's name. The proposed pipeline is called Keystone XL because it’s the second one TransCanada would operate that crosses from Canada to the United States. The original Keystone pipeline has been operating since June 2010.

The jury is still out on whether a shorter pipeline that doesn’t cross an international border could be called Keystone Light—which is also a beer that has roughly 15 fewer calories than the original Keystone.
