Trying to find a middle ground between gun-control supporters and opponents, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is bringing his 'straight talk' to Oregon and Colorado in two new TV ads for Americans for Gun Safety, a nonprofit gun-control group. The ads focus on ballot initiatives in each of those states supporting criminal background checks by unlicensed gun dealers at gun shows.
In both ads, McCain says that "law-abiding citizens have the right to own guns" but "with rights come responsibility."
The ad in Colorado for Amendment 22 began airing today, and the one in Oregon for Measure 5 will start Monday. They were produced by Ringe Media.
Americans for Gun Safety is spending $1 million to run these ads.
Ad Spotlight has the latest commercials from congressional candidates, WH 2000 hopefuls and issue/advocacy groups.
Script of "Yes On 22" (TV)
(On screen: Paid by Americans for Gun Safety Action Fund)JOHN MCCAIN: I'm John McCain with some straight talk. Convicted felons have been able to buy and sell thousands of guns at gun shows because of a loophole in the law -- many were later used in crimes. That's wrong.
Here in Colorado, Amendment 22 will close this dangerous loophole by requiring criminal background checks by unlicensed dealers at gun shows.
I believe law-abiding citizens have the right to own guns. But with rights come responsibilities.
Close the loophole. Vote Yes on 22.

Close the loophole. Vote Yes on 5!
