Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R) and former Gov. Tony Knowles (D) continue to pound home their messages in a new wave of advertising for the Senate race.
Knowles' 30-second TV spot, "Alaska Veterans," highlights his work as governor, noting that he "extended veteran outreach to rural Alaska" and "fought to open pioneer homes to vets." The announcer emphasizes that Knowles himself is a veteran, adding that he "will never turn his back on the men and women who protect our freedoms." Knowles' previous spot also focused on his eight years as governor.
The ad began Tuesday and will air on statewide broadcast and cable networks. Squier Knapp Dunn produced the spot.
Murkowski's two radio spots mention both the former governor and her primary challenger, former state Sen. Mike Miller. In "Depend" -- as in a previous ad -- she criticizes Knowles for "leaving Alaskans with the highest drug costs in the country" and an announcer explains that she is working to lower them by supporting the prescription-drug benefit and exploring importation options. "Keep and Bear" features two NRA spokesmen supporting Murkowski and charges that Miller is "deliberately distorting" Murkowski's record.
Her new 30-second TV spots touch on jobs, health care, veterans, taxes, military spending and gun rights. Seven constituents express their support in "Impressed," and one man even says, "I definitely had reservations when she was first nominated, but I've gotten past those." In "What Alaska Needs," an announcer touts Murkowski's endorsements from the NRA, the Chamber of Commerce, President Bush and the state's "most respected public servants" -- Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens (R) and former Gov. Wally Hickel (R).
McCarthy Marcus Hennings produced Murkowski's ads, which are airing in the statewide rotation until the primary. "What Alaska Needs" and "Depend" both went up last week; "Impressed" and "Keep and Bear" debuted Monday.
If Murkowski defeats Miller in the Aug. 24 primary, she will face Knowles in November. The Cook Political Report rated that race a toss-up.

Script of Murkowski's "Depend" (Radio)
ANNOUNCER: Alaska's seniors need affordable, safe prescription drugs. But as governor, Tony Knowles did nothing, leaving Alaskans with the highest drug costs in the country. Lisa Murkowski took action, voting for a bipartisan Medicare prescription drug benefit, reducing costs for 47,000 Alaska seniors and giving 10,000 Alaskans coverage who otherwise would have had none. The AARP supported the bill, and Alaska doctors say it's already helping. Lisa also won more access for Alaska Medicare patients. One Alaska senior on Lisa Murkowski:WOMAN: Lisa's work means that more Alaskan seniors are able to see their doctors. That's incredibly important.
ANNOUNCER: And Lisa's working for real solutions, like ways to lower drug costs through safe reimportation. So when Tony Knowles attacks, remember: Lisa Murkowski is working to protect our seniors.
LISA MURKOWSKI: This is Lisa Murkowski, and I approved this message.
ANNOUNCER: Paid for by Lisa Murkowski for U.S. Senate.
Script of Murkowski's "Keep and Bear" (Radio)
ANNOUNCER: Some politicians will say and do anything to get elected. Take Mike Miller. Miller is deliberately distorting Lisa Murkowski's record because he doesn't have his own agenda for Alaska. And now some prominent Alaskans have stepped forward to set the record straight.Wayne Anthony Ross is a national director of the NRA:
WAYNE ANTHONY ROSS: The NRA and I support Lisa Murkowski all the way, and I have no doubts whatsoever about her willingness to protect Alaska's right to own firearms.
Eddie Grasser is the NRA field rep in Alaska:
EDDIE GRASSER: Miller appears to be getting desperate, and he seems to be willing to say or do anything to get elected. The truth is, he's basically aiding and abetting the Knowles campaign. I'm not really sure that's a candidate we should trust.
A lot of NRA members are supporting Lisa, because they realize she's actually out helping us raise money to make sure people grow up with an appreciation for our heritage and the Second Amendment, and are out shooting and hunting.
ANNOUNCER: Sen. Lisa Murkowski.
LISA MURKOWSKI: This is Lisa Murkowski, and I approved this message. Paid for by Lisa Murkowski for U.S. Senate.
