The barrage of advertising continues unabated in the most expensive race in Colorado history, with both Ken Salazar (D) and Pete Coors (R) launching several new spots in recent weeks.
Coors furthers his campaign to paint his opponent as weak on terror in one 30-second TV spot, "Defense Contrast," which shows side-by-side photos of Salazar and John Kerry. Another 30-second TV ad, "Down Dirty," accuses Salazar of running a smear campaign "to hide his own record" and a third criticizes Salazar for blocking tort reform.
That ad, "Lawsuit Abuse," went up Sept. 23, and the other two spots began airing last Thursday. The National Republican Senatorial Committee funded "Defense Contrast;" Coors' campaign funded the other two ads. All three spots are running statewide and were produced by McAuliffe Message Media.
Salazar's TV and radio ads hit back at Coors' voting record. The newest 30-second TV spot, "Calluses," as well as a 60-second radio ad called "Would Again," criticize Coors' support for Referendum A, a 2003 ballot initiative on water projects that voters defeated in November.
"No Surprise," a 30-second TV spot, quotes Coors saying, "I don't know what a common man is" during a September League of Women Voters' debate and notes he opposes drug importation from Canada because "he's backed by hundreds of thousands of dollars from the big drug and insurance companies." Salazar's other two ads -- a 60-second radio spot titled "Proud" and a 30-second TV spot titled "Pay As You Go" -- tout Coors' endorsements from the police and firefighters' unions and recommend spending cutbacks in Washington.
Grunwald Communications produced the spots; except for "Calluses," which debuted this week, all the ads began airing on statewide broadcast and cable toward the end of last month.
The Cook Political Report rated the Centennial State race a toss-up.
