Election Day 2001 was a good one for the Democratic Party, which took the gubernatorial races in both New Jersey and Virginia. (The GOP did score a surprise victory in the New York City mayoral race, however.)

In the seven House special elections that took place over the course of the year, Republicans won five seats and Democrats took two. The year's results gave the GOP a net gain in the House of one seat, which came from the party's win in Virginia's 4th District.

• Governor: 27 Republicans, 21 Democrats, 2 independents
  New Jersey Governor -- Jim McGreevey (D)
  Virginia Governor -- Mark Warner (D)

• House: 222 Republicans, 211 Democrats and two independents
  Pennsylvania 09 -- Bud Shuster (R)
  California 32 -- Diane Watson (D)
  Virginia 04 -- Randy Forbes (R)
  Florida 01 -- Jeff Miller (R)
  Massachusetts 09 -- Stephen F. Lynch (D)
  Arkansas 03 -- John Boozman (R)
  South Carolina 02 -- Joe Wilson (R)

• Senate: Unchanged at 50 Democrats, 49 Republicans and one independent (Jim Jeffords of Vermont) who caucuses with the Democrats.
