2002 Gubernatorial Races

With Don Siegleman's (D) Nov. 18 concession in Alabama, the results from all 36 governor races are final. The national breakdown stands at 26 Republicans, 24 Democrats and no independents -- giving the GOP control of the White House, the Senate, the House and the statehouses. Democrats picked up three governor seats this cycle.

- Alabama.
Republican Rep. Bob Riley defeated incumbent Democrat Don Siegelman by about 3,000 votes. Siegelman, after talking about a recount request, conceded on Nov. 18.

Republican Sen. Frank Murkowski defeated Democratic Lt. Gov. Fran Ulmer, 56 percent to 41 percent, in this open-seat contest.

Democratic Attorney General Janet Napolitano defeated Republican former Rep. Matt Salmon, 46 percent to 45 percent.

Incumbent Republican Mike Huckabee defeated Democratic Treasurer Jimmie Lou Fisher, 53 percent to 47 percent.

Democratic Attorney General Jennifer Granholm defeated Republican Lt. Gov. Dick Posthumus, 51 percent to 48 percent.

Republican House Majority Leader Tim Pawlenty defeated Democratic state Senate Majority Leader Roger Moe and Independence Party-nominated former Democratic Rep. Tim Penny. Pawlenty took 45 percent of vote, Moe captured 36 percent, and Penny received 16 percent.

Incumbent Republican Mike Johanns defeated Democratic businessman Stormy Dean, 69 percent to 27 percent.

Incumbent Republican George Pataki defeated Comptroller Carl McCall and Independent businessman Tom Golisano. Pataki received 50 percent of vote, McCall got 33 percent, and Golisano took 14 percent.

Incumbent Republican Bob Taft defeated former Cuyahoga County Commissioner Tim Hagan, 58 percent to 38 percent.

- Oklahoma. Democratic state Sen. Brad Henry defeated Republican former Rep. Steve Largent, 43.3 percent to 42.6 percent. Henry won by about 6,000 votes.

Incumbent Republican Rick Perry defeated Democratic businessman Tony Sanchez, 58 percent to 40 percent.

- Vermont.
Republican Treasurer Jim Douglas appears to have defeated Democratic Lt. Gov. Douglas Racine, 45 percent to 42 percent. The margin stands at approximately 6,000 votes. Because Douglas failed to win 50 percent, the election goes to the Legislature in January. Racine is urging legislators to elect Douglas.
