The post-election governor breakdown is:
  • Republicans: 28
  • Democrats: 22

Each party won five contests on Election Day, but the Washington race between Dino Rossi (R) and Christine Gregoire (D) took more than a month to be decided. After losing the first two counts, Gregoire won the third count by 129 votes. The state Republican Party is considering a legal challenge.

Re-Elected Incumbents

  • Delaware
    Incumbent Gov. Ruth Ann Minner (D) won a second term by holding off challenger Bill Lee (R), 51 percent to 46 percent.
  • North Carolina
    Incumbent Gov. Mike Easley (D) defeated Republican Patrick Ballantine, 55 percent to 43 percent, to win a second term.
  • North Dakota
    Incumbent Gov. John Hoeven (R) easily defeated Democrat Joe Satrom, 71 percent to 28 percent, to win a second term.
  • Vermont
    Incumbent Gov. Jim Douglas (R) earned a second term, defeating Democrat Peter Clavelle 59 percent to 38 percent.

  • Ousted Incumbents

  • Indiana
    Former Office of Management and Budget Director Mitch Daniels (R) ousted incumbent Joe Kernan (D), 53 percent to 46 percent. Daniels Profile

    Challenger John Lynch (D) defeated first-term incumbent Craig Benson (R), 51 percent to 49 percent. Lynch Profile

  • Missouri
    Republican Matt Blunt, the son of Rep. Roy Blunt (R), defeated Democratic nominee Claire McCaskill, 51 percent to 48 percent. Blunt Profile
  • Montana
    Brian Schweitzer (D) won retiring GOP Gov. Judy Martz's seat after beating Bob Brown (R), 50 percent to 46 percent. Schweitzer Profile
  • Utah
    Jon Huntsman Jr. (R), who beat out appointed Gov. Olene Walker for the GOP nomination, bested Democrat Scott Matheson Jr., 57 percent to 42 percent. Huntsman Profile
  • Washington
    After losing the first two counts, Democrat Christine Gregoire beat Republican Dino Rossi in the third count by 129 votes out of 2.9 million ballots cast.
