Louisiana had three open-seat races this cycle with Reps. Chris John (D) and David Vitter (R) running for the Senate and Rep. Billy Tauzin (R) retiring in the 3rd District. In the 3rd District, Democrat Charles Melancon defeated Republican Billy Tauzin III in a Dec. 4 runoff. In the 7th District runoff, Republican Charles Boustany defeated Democratic state Sen. Willie Mount.

Freshman Democratic Rep. Rodney Alexander, who shocked members of his party when he signed up for re-election in the 5th District as a Republican, handily beat his Democratic opponent.
