Campaign Buzz: Recent News

"Gov. Linda Lingle won a historic victory to become the first time Republican and woman in Hawaii to win re-election for the governorship" (Honolulu Star-Bulletin, 11/7/06). ..... Republican National Committee chair Ken Mehlman, at a fundraiser for the Hawaii Republicans, said the party wants more candidates like Lingle to help them gain ground (AP/Honolulu Star-Bulletin, 2/20/06). ..... Former state Sen. Randall Iwase (D) became the first Democrat to announce, dismissing Lingle's record as public relations over substance (Honolulu Advertiser, 1/28/06). ..... State Democratic Party Chairman Brickwood Galuteria said he hopes the party will have a candidate in place before the start of the legislative session on Jan. 18 (Honolulu Star-Bulletin, 1/7/06). ..... Rep. Neil Abercrombie (D) announced that he would not run, "dashing the hopes of" many Democrats who "saw in him the best chance to" beat Lingle (R) (Honolulu Star-Bulletin, 11/1/05).
