"Voters sent a strong message" Nov. 7 "that Gov. Mark Sanford [R] deserves four more years, and one more term to pursue his vision for the state" (Columbia State, 11/8/06). ..... After collecting the 13,000 necessary signatures to appear on the ballot as an independent candidate, state Sen. Jake Knotts (R) announced July 17 that he would not run (AP, 7/17/06). ..... Knotts began circulating petitions July 8 and said he will run as an independent if he obtains the 10,000 necessary signatures by July 17 (Columbia State, 7/8/06). ..... Knotts "picked up a batch of petition forms from the State Election Commission" July 7, hinting that he may run as an independent (Columbia State, 7/7/06). ..... Sanford was first in the race to hit airwaves with a two-ad TV debut May 9 (Columbia State, 5/9/06). ..... Sanford has more than $5 million in cash on hand (Columbia State, 4/11/06). ..... Former Rep. Ken Holland (D) dropped his campaign (Columbia State, 3/8/06). .....
