As you may have already noticed, this week's National Journal is devoted to coverage of the race between Barack Obama and John McCain, and to the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Denver. In these pages you'll find articles on the presidential contest; comparisons of the candidates' stands on the issues; profiles of the swing states that could determine the election's outcome; and maps, phone numbers, and charts of use to convention-goers in Denver.
The issue kicks off National Journal Group's ambitious convention coverage. We're bringing some 115 reporters, editors, photographers, and business and support personnel to Denver to provide our regular subscribers and convention participants with everything from big-picture news and analysis to the times and locations of floor events, delegation meetings, and late-night parties.
If you're a longtime National Journal reader, you may know that we've provided extensive coverage of the Democratic and Republican conventions since 1984. We put a lot of energy into the conventions, and we think that our editorial products reflect that investment. As we have in the past, we're making everything we produce in Denver available to anyone who wants to read it. For two weeks, starting on August 23, subscribers and nonsubscribers alike can access all of the content on our website, www.NationalJournal.com, for free.
Here is some of what we'll be publishing:
* Convention Daily, a tabloid newspaper published Sunday through Thursday in Denver and distributed to 20,000 delegates, journalists, and party operatives. Convention Daily stories will be posted online as soon as they're ready.
* Convention Nightly, a late-afternoon report on the news of the day and a look ahead to the evening's proceedings on the convention floor.
* Daily online reports from The Hotline on how the conventions are playing in the news media around the country.
* On Call, Hotline's blog featuring up-to-the-minute news and analysis.
* Earlybird, Wake-Up Call, and Last Call--online roundups of news, commentary, and other headlines.
* The Sked, a constantly updated online listing of events in Denver.
* Online photo galleries of memorable scenes inside and outside the convention hall.
* Columns and articles by some of the nation's top political analysts, including Ronald Brownstein, Charlie Cook, and William Schneider.
* First-person remembrances of past conventions from such notables as Evan Bayh and Mario Cuomo.
* Links to restaurant reviews and local attractions provided by 5280 magazine, our editorial partner in Denver.
We'll be providing the same extensive coverage in Minneapolis-St. Paul for the Republican National Convention during the first week of September. Then it's back to our home base in Washington for the final two months of the presidential race, the election, the inauguration, and the start of a new administration. We hope you turn to us regularly during this pivotal period.
Sincerely,
Suzanne P. Clark, President
