Correction: Rep. Hal Rogers, R-Ky., chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, has been invited to the White House meeting.
President Obama has invited House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., Sen. Dan Inouye, D-Hawaii., and Rep. Hal Rogers, R-Ky.,, to the White House for a Tuesday meeting to discuss the ongoing negotiations over the continuing resolution, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney announced at Monday’s press briefing.
“[Obama] is concerned that we need to reach a final agreement. Time is of the essence,” Carney told reporters. Throughout the negotiation process, Carney has projected confidence that an agreement could be reached without a government shutdown. Vice President Biden has been taking the lead for the administration on budget negotiations. Obama said last week it would be the “height of irresponsibility” to fail to pass a budget before the current CR expires Friday night.
“It’s a good time, a very good time for these senior leaders to come together and assess where we are and make some decisions about whether or not we can make a final agreement…he believes we can do it, and we are close,” Carney said.
