DAY 4: Giving up the fight, Nixon tells a fractured nation he's finished

The president announces his resignation in prime-time address from the Oval Office.

At 11 a.m. on Aug. 8, 1974, President Nixon met with Vice President Gerald Ford, an old friend since their days in the House of Representatives together in the late 1940s. They talked for over an hour and reminisced. Nixon emphatically urged Ford to keep Henry Kissinger as secretary of State.
